About NHS

The National Honor Society (NHS) is a worldwide service organization that elevates a school’s commitment to the values of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. NHS students volunteer in their communities at the highest rates and make connecting with and serving within the community a priority.

CHS NHS members are required to be active participants in their club. They must regularly attend meetings, take part in the club service events, maintain the required grade criteria, and consciously present themselves in a manner that displays leadership and character.

CHS Bylaws are available to review in the school office upon request.

Covington High NHS Selection Procedure

The National Honor Society chapter of Covington High School is a duly chartered and affiliated chapter of the National Honor Society.

Membership is open to those students who meet the required standard levels in four areas of evaluation: scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Students are selected for membership by a 5-member Faculty Council, which bestows this honor upon qualified students on behalf of the faculty of our school each year.  The chapter adviser, Mrs. Lara Finnan, facilitates all selection procedures and chapter activities during the year.

Sophomores who have completed one semester of enrollment at Covington High School and currently have a raw cumulative 3.3 GPA are candidates for membership, and will be notified of their candidacy in the first quarter of the school year by the NHS adviser. After satisfying the enrollment and Scholarship criteria (the raw cumulative GPA), candidates will be further evaluated on the basis of Service (20+ hours of community service recommended), Leadership and Character by a 5-member faculty council. Selection decisions are determined by evaluation and scoring of the Candidate Form by the faculty council.

Candidates may elect to attend a meeting at which they will receive more information about the Covington High School NHS chapter and the selection process.

Candidate forms will be due by date listed on the form, which is usually within ten days following the information meeting. No Candidate Forms will be accepted late. This typically occurs in the first half of the first quarter of the year.

The Faculty Council will then meet to review and evaluate candidates. This evaluation will include the Candidate Forms, teacher referrals, disciplinary records, attendance records, and a candidate letter to the council.

To evaluate a candidate’s character, the Faculty Council obtains additional professional input. First, official school disciplinary and attendance records are reviewed. Second, members of the faculty are requested to provide their professional reflections on a candidate’s service activities, character, citizenship, and leadership. These forms and the Candidate Forms are carefully reviewed by the Faculty Council to determine whether each candidate meets the criteria for membership.  Following a review of the results of the Faculty Council voting by the principal, candidates are notified regarding selection or non-selection by mail according to a predetermined schedule.

Once the notification process is completed, a formal induction ceremony is held at the school the following fall to recognize all the newly selected members.  Once inducted, new members are required to maintain the same level of performance (or better) in all criteria that led to their selection.  This obligation includes regular attendance at chapter meetings held twice a month during the school year, and participation in the chapter service projects. Students or parents who have questions regarding the selection process or membership obligations can contact the chapter adviser at lara.finnan@stpsb.org.
