CHS Student of the Year

The Covington High School Student of the Year for 2017-18 is Matthew. Matthew, who has also never made a B at CHS, is a committed student who consistently enrolls in Honors, AP, and Dual Enrollment classes.  He scored a 31 on the ACT, with a perfect score of 36 on the reading portion.  He competed in District and State Literary rallies, where he placed 4th overall in Spanish II at the state level.  He has won departmental awards in both Spanish and World Geography.  Matthew represented CHS at American Legion’s Boys State last summer, was nominated for the National Academy of Future Scientists and Technologists Award, was nominated to participate in the National Leadership Forum, and earned 4th chair in the Parish Honor Band.  On campus, Matthew is recognizable as one of the CHS Marching Lion Band Drum Major.  He has also held band leadership positions as the trumpet section leader and as the first chair trumpet.  Matthew competes as a Baseball Lion, having been a member of the Varsity team since his sophomore year.  In fact, this summer he attended a baseball camp at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, where he hopes to attend college.  Matthew was elected to the Sweetheart Court for the past two years and participates in the Student Council.  Around school and the community, Matthew volunteers his time helping out with Special Olympics, with the Mardi Gras Special Ed Prom, and as the scoreboard and clock operator for freshman and JV football.  Matthew also helped with the clean-up effort locally after the flooding events of 2016. Mrs. Huval says of Matthew, “What sets him apart is not his grades, nor his ACT scores, nor the accolades he receives, but the genuine interest he takes in everything around him:  people, academic subjects, his community.  He cares so much, and expresses it in his dedication and commitment to everything he touches.”
