HIGH
SCHOOL DIPLOMA AND ENDORSEMENTS
Standard
Diploma
The 23 units required
for graduation shall include 15 required units and 8 elective units; the
elective units can be earned at technical colleges as provided in Standard
2.103.35.
Minimum Course Requirements for High School Graduation
Effective for Incoming Freshmen 2005-06 and thereafter:
English-Shall be English I, II, and III, in consecutive order; and English IV
or Business English.
Mathematics-All students must complete one of the following:
Algebra 1 (1 unit) or
Algebra 1 Part 1 (1 unit) and Algebra 1 Part 2 (1 unit) or
Integrated Mathematics 1 (1 unit)
The remaining unit(s) shall come from the following:
Integrated Mathematics II, Integrated Mathematics III, Geometry,
Algebra II, Financial Mathematics, Advanced Mathematics I,
Advanced Mathematics II, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Probability and
Statistics, and Discrete Mathematics.
Science-Shall be 1 unit of Biology;
1 unit from the following Physical Science Cluster:
Physical Science, Integrated Science,
Chemistry I, Physics I, or Physics of Technology I;
1 unit from the following courses:
Aerospace Science, Biology II, Chemistry II, Earth
Science, Environmental Science, Physics II, Physics of
Technology II, Agriscience II, or any other course
not already taken from the Physical Science cluster, or a locally
designed elective.
Students may not take both Integrated Science and
Physical Science.
Agriscience I is a prerequisite to Agriscience II and is an
elective course.
Social Studies-Shall be American History; one-half unit of Civics; one-half unit of
Free Enterprise; and one of the following: World History, World
Geography, or Western Civilization, or European History
Health-Shall be one-half unit of Health Education
Physical Education-Shall be one and one-half units of Physical Education I and Physical Education II, or Adapted
Physical Education for eligible special education students.
*The substitution of JROTC is permissible. A maximum of four units may be
used toward graduation.
Electives-Shall be a minimum of 8 credits.
Additional High School Graduation Requirements
• In addition to completing a minimum of 23 Carnegie Units of credits as presented in
Bulletin 741, the student shall also be required to pass the Graduation Exit Exam according
to designated BESE policy.
• The English language arts and Mathematics components of the Graduate Exit Exam
(GEE) shall first be administered to students in the 10th grade.
• The science and social studies components of the Graduate Exit Exam (GEE) shall
be administered to students in the 11th grade.
• Beginning with the incoming 2000-2001 9th grade, in addition to completing a
minimum of 23 Carnegie Units of credit as prescribed in Bulletin 741, a student shall be
required to pass the English language arts and mathematics portions of GEE and either the
science or social studies portions of GEE to graduate.
• Remediation and retake opportunities will be provided for students who do not pass
a test. Schools will inform students and parents in writing of the remediation opportunities
and will document refusal of remediation opportunities.
• The school system shall notify each student and parents or guardians of the
requirement of passing the Graduation Exit Exam prior to or upon the student entering the
10th grade.
• Students transferring to any high school within the school system shall be notified of
the requirement of passing the Graduation Exit Exam.
• In order to participate in the commencement ceremonies at the high school level, a
student must have completed all graduation requirements as specified by the State
Department of Education, the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, and the St.
Tammany Parish School Board and be in good standing as far as discipline is concerned.
PreGED/Skills Option students must meet the local requirements to participate in
commencement activities.
High
School Area of Concentration
All high schools shall
provide students the opportunity to complete an area of concentration
with an academic focus and/or a career focus.
1. To complete an academic area of concentration, students shall meet
the current course requirements for the Tuition Opportunity Program for
Students (TOPS) Opportunity Award plus one additional Carnegie unit in
mathematics, science, or social studies.
2. To complete a career area of concentration, students shall meet the
minimum requirements for graduation including four elective primary credits
in the area of concentration and two related elective credits, including
one computer/technology course.
