A committee of CHS teachers met to choose the Covington High School Students of the Month for May, 2016.  The committee selects from a pool of students nominated by the faculty based on the traits of scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character. May’s CHS Students of the Month are Katie and Sophia.

Fall Student Achievements

FFA News

Abigail Jenkins was elected during the summer at the Louisiana State FFA Convention and Expo as the Louisiana FFA Association State Secretary which is a very prestigious honor. Colt Dutruch was also elected during the summer at the Louisiana Area IV Leadership Camp to represent Area IV (Southeast portion of Louisiana) as the Vice President. CHS FFA is proud to have not one but two officers to represent Louisiana FFA. Congratulations to both Abigail and Colt!

Powerlifting Champions

Congrats to our two powerlifters who represented CHS in the world championship in Prague last week! Tyran came in 1st Squat, 2nd Bench, and 3rd in Deadlift, and came in 2nd place overall! Shawn came in 2nd in Deadlift and ranked 4th overall!

4-H Shooting Winner

Sophomore Emma Busby participated in the National 4-H Shooting Sports Competition this summer In Grand Island, Nebraska back in June. She had placed 3rd at the state level competition in Mansfield, LA which qualified her to go to Nationals. She was only one of two participants from LA.

Channel 13 Video Institute

Each summer, Channel 13 selects students in the parish to work with the professionals on the School System’s Channel 13 educational television staff at the David C. Treen Instructional Technology Center in Mandeville. This summer, four students from Covington High attended (pictured with CHS teacher Vance Lynch)! See their videos below:

Geaux Teach

Joy won 1st place in Geaux Teach Ag, a career development event at the state FFA convention.  As the 1st place winner she also received a $1000 scholarship from LSU agricultural education department.

PTSA Reflections Winners

Several students in Mr. Schwartz's and Ms. Hickman's art classes received awards recently for the PTSA Reflections contest. 

The following students were recognized at the district level for earning the Award of Merit.  They are:

Two of our students won district and will advance to state earning the Award of Excellence. They are:

Emma Wins USA Shooting Sports

Emma won 3rd place in .22 pistol and 1st place in air pistol when she competed with the USA Shooting Sports Junior Olympics competition in Amite.

Welding Team Wins 1st

The CHS FFA Welding Team Placed 1st and 4th in the District competition held at the Northshore Technical College’s Bogalusa campus yesterday.  There were 65 students competing from St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, Washington, and St. Helena parishes.

Dalton won High Point or 1st place individual in the competition, followed by 2nd place Samuel and 4th place Scott .  Justin also competed placing 17th out of the 65 students.

Talented Music at the Hilton

CHS Talented Music students were invited to perform at the Hilton Hotel in New Orleans for the Literacy and Learning conference.

Debate Team Wins 1st Place

Our CHS Parliamentary Procedure/Debate won 1st place last night and students on the team are:

A. Jenkins
B. Mowen
C. Dutruch
S. Tassin
S. Jarrell
D. Pounds

Also, there are several different public speaking events the students compete in and the following qualified for State:

C. Dutruch placed 1st in Extemporaneous Speaking

S. Cannizzaro placed 1st in the FFA Creed Speaking Contest
