Spring 2013- CyberPatriots

The Covington High "CyberCats" recently completed their semi-final round of the CyberPatriot and learned that they had advanced to the finals to be held in Washington D. C.  CyberPatriot is the premiere national high school cyber defense competition created by the Air Force Association to inspire high school students toward careers in cybersecurity or other science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines critical to our nation’s future.  The CyberCats had previously won two rounds of very difficult competition in which they are tasked with downloading a "virtual machine" and identifying the vulnerabilities within it and repairing it.  The first two rounds involved Windows images with which the team was familiar but the semi-finals involved a Linux image of Ubuntu and a forensics image (cryptology) which was relatively new to the team and drew on each  members knowledge and experience.  Their hard work paid off with a win which includes a fully funded trip to Washington D. C. to compete in the finals .  The team departs for Washington D. C. on March 13th and will return on March 17th.  The entire trip including airfare, hotel and meals is funded by participating sponsors (Northrop Grumman, Cisco, AT&T, CIAS, SAIC, Raytheon, URS, Splunk, the Air Force Association, K2 Share and Embry Riddle Aeronautical University).  Needless to say, the CyberCats are excited, placing (1-3) in the finals competition means thousands of dollars in scholarships.

The Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician (CCENT) validates the ability to install, operate and troubleshoot a small enterprise branch network, including basic network security. With a CCENT, the network professional demonstrates the skills required for entry-level network support positions - the starting point for many successful careers in networking. Andrew is the first student to get the certification while still enrolled in high school since Mr. Lynch took over the program in 2005, and perhaps more impressive, obtained it only 3 months into the school year. The certification material is normally covered over one full academic year, thus most students' first opportunity to take the CCENT is after graduation. Congratulations Andrew!
