The Tempest

We are such stuff as dreams are made on! That timeless Shakespearean phrase comes to life on stage as The Covington High School Department of Music, Theatre and Dance present William Shakespeare’s “The Tempest”, January 19, 20, 21 at 7pm. The play is believed to be one of Shakepeare’s last plays, and even more so a bidding of farewell from the Bard himself. The play’s director, CHS theatre teacher Gary Mendoza, chose this show because of the deep connection between the characters, as well as the relationship that the lead character Prospero has with the audience. According to Mendoza, “it’s a revenge tale, but it’s one that works out best for everyone in the end. What Prospero has dealt with makes the audience want to sympathize with him and follow him on his journey, and the journey is pretty crazy.”

That journey follows Prospero (Madeline Monlezun, playing a male’s role which is often necessary in a female heavy school program) as he raises his teenage daughter Miranda (Paige Nold) on a deserted island. Other island inhabitants are the slave Caliban (Marissa Rogers) who hates Prospero and wants him killed and the fairy servant Ariel (Jade Cooper) who has been promised freedom, but only after he accomplishes all of Prospero’s tasks. One of those tasks is to create a tempest (a storm) to shipwreck a boat carrying the some very important people. Once washed ashore and scattered, King Alonso (Savannah Taylor), his brother Sebastian (Dejeune Richardson), his counselor Gonzalo (Cody Counts) and Prospero’s backstabbing brother Antonio (Cassidy Frazier) begin the search for Alonso’s son Ferdinand (Cole Delacruz). He is found first by Ariel and delivered to Prospero, only to be matched with Miranda who immediately falls in love with him. Adding to the calamity are two drunk fools, Stephano (Nicole Naquin) and Trinculo (Camryn Caserta), who stumble across Caliban and forge an alliance with the monster to kill Prospero. There are also three mischievous fairies (Grace McCullar, Madison Rodrigue and Kymi Russo) who assist Ariel along the way, a directionally challenged Boatswain (Serena Bonnette) and two servants (Grace Armontrout and Emma Tolliver) that are stuck with Alonso and his crew. Additional fairies and sailors are played by Claire Burns, Madison George, Tristan Head, Ruby Jourdan, Savannah Krista, Rebecca Lucia, Emily Mizell, Callie O’Bryant, Haylie Ory, Hannah Rogers, and Sydney Sorbet. Karah Guidry is the Production Stage Manager.

To see how it all gets resolved, come see “THE TEMPEST” on January 19, 20 and 21 at 7pm in the Elmer Lyons Performance Center on the campus of Covington High. Tickets are $8 for students, $10 for adults and free to all school board employees. For more information please call the CHS Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance at 893-9843.
