Baskets of Hope

The Baskets of Hope Fundraiser is this Friday. The promotional video is available on YouTube. This money will go towards creating baskets for St. Tammany students in our local hospitals.

TOPS Consent Form

Click here to download (pdf) the TOPS consent form. A new law passed by the state legislature requires that all students must provide consent in order to qualify for TOPS college financial assistance. Students who do not turn in the form, or deny consent, will not receive TOPS. The consent form can be turned in to the front office or any teacher.

Mel Rogers in Phantom

Covington High Talented Music teacher Mel Rogers, aka Phantom of the Saenger, getting ready for a performance of Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Phantom of the Opera". The mega-hit musical, which has been touring the US for 20 years, is currently camped at the Saenger Theater in New Orleans. Mr. Rogers is part of the 15-piece pit orchestra made up of mostly local and some traveling musicians.

Talented Music at Luncheon

The CHS Talented Music class was once again called upon to provide the musical entertainment for the Teacher of the Year luncheon. Pictured are clarinetist Alexandra, Teacher of the Year Stella Wood, and vocalist Farrah. For several years running, Mr. Rogers' students have been the first-call musicians for this event, the parent volunteer appreciation luncheon, the new teacher induction ceremony, and numerous events at central office.

Hailey Wins at Dressage

Hailey Cunningam has earned 2014 Southern Eventing and Dressage association, Reserve Champion, combined test, Tadpole division.

Brandon Gets 1st Place

Covington High Art Department is pleased to announce that Brandon recently took 1st place in the High School division at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Poster contest this past Monday.  His compelling rendition of Ms. Rosa Parks was the judges’ favorite in illustrating this year’s theme, The Montgomery Bus Boycot, and will be on display in our school, along with the other remarkable posters representing Covington High’s participation in the poster contest.  Congratulations, Brandon on your outstanding achievement!

FFA Speaking Competition

The CHS FFA competed in the Area IV Speaking Competition last night, which encompasses schools within the entire Southeast portion of Louisiana.  There were 36 schools present, and 68 students were competing in either of the following competitions:

Prepared Public Speaking:  Students must compose a 6-8 minute speech that is presented to a panel of judges and a 10 minute round of questioning follows the speech.

·Amber Monlezun Placed 4th in this competition

Extemporaneous Speaking: students are given a current Global Agriculture issue and are given 30 minutes to develop a 5-8 minute speech followed by a 10 minute round of questioning

·Colt Durtruch placed 1st in this competition and will be representing our School at the State Convention in June for a chance to compete in Nationals in October of next school year.

·Chris Mowen also competed and  placed 3rd

Creed Speaking: students present the FFA Creed and are judged on presentation, once they  are finished there is a 10 minute round of questioning

·Karah Guidry placed 4th in this competition…….and Scout Cannizzaro from Folsom Jr. High placed 1st in the competition

Geaux Teach Ag: students are to design a mock 15minute educational lesson on a specific topic (Ag Leadership Skills this year) and must assess their students with both a pre and post exam…. The student then goes through a 10 minute round of questioning

·Joy Nettles place 2nd in this competition and will be competing at the State Convention in June as well.  This contest has not been adopted Nationally yet, but Louisiana is one of 3 states piloting this contest.

Parliamentary Procedure: 6 students are given a scenario of various Motions and an Agricultural Topic to use in order to demonstrate the techniques used to conduct a properly run business meeting according to Robert’s Rules of Order.  Also, they are questioned for 10 minutes after the competition.

·Our team Placed 1st  in this competition, and will compete Tuesday for the State Title……the team consisted of:

·Colt Dutruch, Abigail Jenkins, Karah Guidry, Brandi Mowen, Saige Tassin, and Brittany Lachute

District PTSA Reflections Winners

Congratulations to the following CHS students who placed at the district level of the PTSA Reflections contest:

Awards of Excellence in Literature: Amber Cook and Phoebe Allen

Award of Excellence in Visual Art: Madeline Monlezun and Brandon Brumfield

Award of Merit in Visual Art: Kacey Korcoran, Omri Howarth, and Evelyn Miller

The Arawrds of Excellence entries will be forwarded to the state level for the next round of judging.  Good luck to Amber Cook, Phoebe Allen, Madeline Monlezun, and Brandon Brumfield!

2015 Cattleman's Queen

CHS Junior, Amanda, was recently chosen as the 2015 Louisiana Cattleman's Queen.  As part of her reign, Amanda will travel all across the state to different livestock shows and functions. She will be required to promote the beef industry and share her knowledge of the Cattlemen’s Association and the cattle industry. She will attend events like the Louisiana Beef Cook-off in Shreveport as well as the Ag Expo in West Monroe. She will also attend beef conferences and The Cattle Festival in Abbeville, Louisiana.
