CHS Teachers Receive Grants

Covington High teachers Daniel Scheer and Vance Lynch each received funds from the Deborah Rochelle Teacher grant this year.

Mr. Scheer's $4500 grant funded the acquisition of a wind tunnel and enough mini-wind turbines to allow every class to design their own turbine blades to experimentally determine the optimum size, shape, mass and blade pitch for the production of electricity. The project addresses the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) on all domains including the interaction of forces, energy conversions, engineering, technology, and the application of science to produce real world solutions.

Mr. Lynch's $4950 grant allowed students to begin an in-school photo studio that is now used for events like dance photography and theatre cast photos. The funds were used to purchase a professional camera, lens, and photo printer. Students learn to advertise and organize large-scale event photo opportunities, take the pictures, and use Photoshop to prep them for printing. The grant now allows Covington High to take and print pictures in-house for their annual Homecoming and Sweetheart dances, junior ring ceremony, cast photos for Theatre and Choir productions, and other such events. Mr. Lynch's students also create and print Photoshops of senior athletes as gifts for their families.

Poetry Out Loud

Poetry Out Loud is a National Recitation Contest. Created by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, Poetry Out Loud is administered in partnership with the State Arts Agencies of all 50 states, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. Students compete “in-house” with guest judges to determine who will represent CHS at parish competition. This year’s CHS judges included Cedric Bridges, choral music director at CHS; Rebecca Smith, CHS graduate and former POL winner at Parish as well as State competitor; David Armand, CHS alum, author, and university instructor, and Canese Jarboe, poet and university instructor.  These judges selected the top 3 from CHS who competed at Parish: Ella, Joy, and Elizabeth. Joy (awarded 1st place at Poetry Out Loud Parish level) and Ella (awarded 3rd place at POL Parish level) will advance to State.
