Schenck: American Legion Educator

Each year the American Legion recognizes candidates for their Educator of the Year.  The American Legion is split into 8 districts that encompass the state of Louisiana.

This year, Kenny Schenck, Special Education and Regular Education teacher and Head Wrestling Coach at Covington High School was nominated as the Local American Legion and District 6 American Legion Educator of the year.  District 6 includes school districts of St. Tammany, Livingston, Baron Rouge among other parishes in the state.  Mr. Schenck is now 1 of 8 teachers that is in the running for the American Legion State of Louisiana Educator of the Year.  The State competition winner will be chosen at a later time.

Below is a picture from the District award ceremony of Mr. Schenck receiving his award.

CHS Teachers Receive Grants

Covington High teachers Daniel Scheer and Vance Lynch each received funds from the Deborah Rochelle Teacher grant this year.

Mr. Scheer's $4500 grant funded the acquisition of a wind tunnel and enough mini-wind turbines to allow every class to design their own turbine blades to experimentally determine the optimum size, shape, mass and blade pitch for the production of electricity. The project addresses the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) on all domains including the interaction of forces, energy conversions, engineering, technology, and the application of science to produce real world solutions.

Mr. Lynch's $4950 grant allowed students to begin an in-school photo studio that is now used for events like dance photography and theatre cast photos. The funds were used to purchase a professional camera, lens, and photo printer. Students learn to advertise and organize large-scale event photo opportunities, take the pictures, and use Photoshop to prep them for printing. The grant now allows Covington High to take and print pictures in-house for their annual Homecoming and Sweetheart dances, junior ring ceremony, cast photos for Theatre and Choir productions, and other such events. Mr. Lynch's students also create and print Photoshops of senior athletes as gifts for their families.
