Art Department : Frequently Asked Question

This page contains answers to common questions of students and parents.

What kind of homework will I see? The art classes are studio-style with the majority of the work completed during class. Homework will be occasional make-up after an excused absence or when there's extra effort and time being put in for a better grade/product...or when there's a test scheduled.

What books will be assigned? The art department is full of books (from the school, the public library, and our own collections) but there is no textbook issued to students. We do however have a classroom set of Art textbooks, which we use for in class assignments.

How do you grade artwork? All assignments are graded on specific criteria given during instruction, as well as on creative effort, craftsmanship, and application of design principles.

How are the daily grades earned? Students must spend at least 95% of their class time engaged in actively working on their assignment, they must keep their work area clean and be responsible for any tools or materials used. If they are absent they must have an excuse as outlined in school policy. It is the student's responsibility for all make up work.

May a student remain in the regular art, music, or theatre class in addition to the talented class? -Yes, and a high school student may earn credit for both

May a student be screened and/or evaluated in more than one area of the Talented Arts Program? -Yes

May a student participate in more than one area of the Talented Arts Program at the same time? -Yes, if classified in more than one area and the IEP committee determines that there is room in the student's schedule and/or it is in the best interest of the student.

How are Talented Arts Program students served?
-The parent is sent a copy of the evaluation; the Talented Arts program teacher who will be teaching the student sets up an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) conference with the parent and other appropriate School personnel to construct a plan of goals and objectives for the student.

-High school students attend class as they would any other regularly Scheduled elective subject: one half of a Carnegie Unite credit is received After successful completion of one semester of a Talented course.

-K-8 students attend class once or twice a week for a total of 150 minutes and are taught either at their school site or combined with other students at a resource center.

If a student does not pass the screening or evaluation, can he/she try again? -Yes, but it is suggested that they wait at least one year before being
screened or evaluated again so they may improve on suggested areas.
