Historical Highlights of Covington High School

In 1913 the School Board passed a resolution making the Covington School a high school. Then, with the passage of a special tax and bond election in 1914, there was the money to move the old wood building and build a new brick one.

Fire and Aftermath

In October 1974, a fire destroyed the old Covington High building. The students finished the school year in a variety of locations, including portable classrooms, in undamaged parts of the building, at Covington Elementary, and the Knights of Columbus Hall. A new Covington High School was in the process of construction on Highway 190 West and completed by August 1975.

1976 Football State Championship

The Covington High Lions excelled for many years in football, topped by their undefeated run in 1976. The Lions beat the undefeated Indians of Istrouma 14-7 for the AAAA State Championship. The win capped a 10-0 season and extended a regular season winning streak to 33 straight games.

The head coach at the time was Jack Salter, pictured, and it is for he whom the current football stadium is named.

Current Day

Construction began in the summer of 2013 of a tower to hold the original bell from before the school burned down. Funding for the bell tower is through donations, and was completed during Homecoming Week, 2013. People interested in donating may purchase a personalized brick that will be placed in the plaza.
